Women's Foil
Promising German Anja Mueller, who came in second in the 2005 Leipzig World Championships, advanced easily out of the 64, and won a close bout against Mi Jung Seo KOR 7-5. Upset! Aida Chanaeva RUS, seeded 18t, upset Mueller in 16, 11-10.
Sylwia Gruchala POL advanced 15-2 in the 64, and then 15-2 in the 32. In the 16, Gruchala met 20th Aida Mohamed HUN, who had fenced a more difficult series, beating 13th-ranked Julia Khakimova 15-14. Mohamed was finally able to beat Gruchala in a World Championships, beating her 8-7 in overtime.
In the round of 8, Valentina Vezzali overcame countrymate Elisa Di Francisca ITA 11-5; Aida Mohammed HUN conducted another upset against 5th seed Ianna Rouzavina RUS 6-5. 3rd seed Korean star Hun Hee Nam KOR was eliminated by Margherita Granbassi ITA, while Giovanna Trillini ITA beat Mueller-killer Aida Chanaeva RUS 15-4.

Saturday 9/30
Valentina Vezzali ITA is the top of the bracket, Anja Mueller GER 2nd, emerging star Hyun Hee Nam KOR as 3rd, Sylvie Gruchala 4th. Gruchala suffered an early knock-out last year but is looking strong, and it came down to a slugfest between Vezzali and Mueller for first.
FP favorite Aida Mohammed HUN is 20th, facing Shaimaa El Gammal EGY, and with her low seed she may meet real challenges rather sooner than usual. Nonetheless it's shaping up to be Vezzali, Mueller, Gruchala, and Trillini near the top, all of them utterly reliable competitors. The dark horses are Nam, who is only getting better, and perhaps some standout performances from Team USA (Cross / Zimmerman, who have posted great results in the past, and Thompson, who looks strong today.)
USA
Iris Zimmerman USA went 3 and 3 in pools, including a loss to the evocatively named Carolin Golubytskyi GER (out of Tauber). Nonetheless, seeded 55th, she had a bye into the round of 64, where she now faces Italian powerhouse Giovanna Trillini ITA.
Doris Willette also went 3 and 3, is 54th seed and facing another Italian, Margherita Granbassi ITA, who is seeded 11th.
Hanna Thompson had better results in pools, 6 and 1, only dropping a 5-1 bout to Daniella Tanase ROM. 26th seed, she faces 39th seed Maki Kawanishi JPN.
Emily Cross was 5 and 2 in pools, losing to Aida Mohamed HUN and Johana Fuenmayor-Choles VEN. 46th seed gets her a bye into the 64, where she's fencing 19th seed Monica Kwan CAN.
